English III Expectations: (1st Grading Period)

We will begin our survey of American Literature by looking at Native American Origin Legends/ Myths. We will move on to the Puritans in America and discuss the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 as we begin reading the play, The Crucible. We will expand our vocabulary by learning the meaning of new words that we come across in our readings of American Literature. We will start with our warm-ups every day.  We will begin by learning some tricks of correct grammar. Then we will be finding and fixing common errors in real life. We will start working on analogies, too. Each student must keep up with these daily. There will not be a good time to try to get them all later. The warm-ups are turned in for a test grade the last week of the grading period.

AP English Language and Composition Expectations: (1st Grading Period)

We will begin our study of analyzing documents surrounding Early American Literture. We ask the question, “What is the message the author is trying to tell his/her audience?” We will review persuasive techniques (rhetorical strategies) and talk about the art of rhetoric.  We will explore aurgmentation during this time looking at the “writerly decisions” that an author/speaker makes in a piece of literature.  We will continue adding popular SAT vocabulary words to our repertoire. We will look at AP Exam sample questions and timed write essay assignments. We will begin our warm-ups of alllusions, literary terms, and symbols. There will be a warm-up test at the end of the grading period.
